#4 The Key Attack

In this section, we will focus on key attack, a fundamental technique that influences piano playing. There are different ways we can attack the keys: From the fingers, from the wrist, or even from the arm.

Attacking the keys from the fingers involves using the motion of our fingers to touch the keys. This technique allows for precise and controlled playing, especially in fast passages.

Attacking the keys from the wrist requires a slight motion of the wrist to reach the keys. It can be useful for longer notes and legato passages, as it allows for a smooth connection between the tones. If you’ve never heard the word “legato”, no worries, we will talk about that later on.

Attacking the keys from the arm involves a larger motion of the entire arm, which is particularly suitable for powerful and expressive passages. It enables us to produce more volume and have a broader range of expression.

You can use these techniques individually or even combine them. The key is not to overthink but to let your feeling guide you. Discover which method feels the most natural and comfortable for you.

Piano playing is an art that improves with practice and dedication. Allow the music to guide you and explore the freedom of developing your own style. Now, let's place our fingers, wrists, and arms on the keys and embark on our journey of piano playing!
